The first city retail incubation program in Michigan has sponsored a new scooter shop opening today in Kalamazoo.

Ace’s Cycle is receiving subsidized rent at the Kalamazoo Mall in the recently updated Peregrine Square building and is getting business coaching, Downtown Kalamazoo Inc., a private organization that runs programs for the Downtown Development Authority, told the Kalamazoo Gazette .

The incubation program was started under a 2008 state law that allows DDAs to fund incubators for new retailers in downtown districts.

Ace’s, owned by Doug Knudsen and Michael Applegate, will sell scooters, scooter parts, motorcycle parts, accessories and will repair scooters.

The DDA approved $30,000 to support the incubation program this year. Ace’s will receive $10,000.
