Alberta Powersports exec seeks age restrictions for ATV riders

A Canadian powersports executive says Alberta should ban ATV riders under the age of 16.

Bob Ramsay, of the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council, made his remarks to a judge looking into the death of a 12-year-old rider in 2007. The inquiry seeks to determine what caused the accident and how it might have been prevented.

Ramsay told the judge that helmets should be mandatory and youngsters under 16 should not be allowed to ride ATVs made for adults.

Provincial officials are working on draft legislation for mandatory helmet use, but it would apply on public land, not on private property, according to Alberta Local News.

An ATV riders’ association will give the final testimony in the inquiry. Then it may take several months before the judge issues recommendations.
