The 2009 edition of the Motorcycle Design Awards, sponsored by the Motorcycle Design Association (MDA), is scheduled to take place in conjunction with the Milan International Motor Show (EICMA), Nov. 10-15.

Winners will be selected in the following categories: Supersport, Open, Junior (up to 200cc), Scooter and Concept.

The MDA was created in 2001 by co-founders Glynn Kerr and Francois-Marie Dumas. The aim of the association is to bring together motorcycle designers of all nationalities, to promote their activities and to ease communication between designers and potential clients. The MDA now has more than 150 members, including freelance designers, engineers, model-makers and design studios from all over the world.

Only MDA members are allowed to cast their vote in the competition.

"Good design is no longer just a selling point within the motorcycle industry — it is a necessity," says designer and MDA co-founder Glynn Kerr. "Yet it remains a highly specialized business, with few individuals who are sufficiently qualified and experienced to offer a truly professional service. The MDA was established to recognize those proficient in the trade, and to promote motorcycle design in general, by acting as the central contact point between designers and their clients, and as a public database."

The first ever presentation of the Motorcycle Design Awards was at the "Mondial du Deux Roues" (Paris Motorcycle Show) in September 2001. Later editions were also held at INTERMOT in Germany and EICMA in Italy. No formal awards ceremonies were held in 2007 and 2008.
