BEAVERTON, Ore. — Once again, motorcycle owners with a keen appreciation of lighting will square off in PIAA's third annual Functional Lighting Contest, Wednesday evening, June 4, at the mega-popular Americade Rally for touring motorcycle enthusiasts Nicknamed the "Battle of the Bulbs," the PIAA contest will again be an epic struggle to crown the best and the brightest in motorcycle lighting.

"We decided our keep our bright idea going," explained PIAA Powersports Manager Gordon Robertson. "Each year the contest proves more and more popular. It makes sense for PIAA, with its history of creating the world?s best lighting products, to sponsor a lighting contest — and Americade is the perfect venue. Again, the PIAA Functional Lighting Contest should be very competitive and fun for participants and spectators alike."
The PIAA Functional Lighting Contest will take place Wednesday evening at 9:30 p.m., with three categories of competition: Stock, for bikes with stock headlights using 55W bulbs plus up to two 55W auxiliary lights; Open Halogen, for any combination of halogen lamps and bulbs; and Open HID, for any combination of HID and Halogen lamps.
Contestants position the bike 50 feet away from a scoring panel punctuated by a random selection of small holes. A light meter is held behind the holes to determine brightness — measured in lumens — to determine the brightest lighting system.
The top three winners in each class will receive gift gas cards. All contest participants also will be entered into a drawing to win a PIAA Cross Country HID lamp kit. In addition, PIAA is encouraging all Americade spectators and riders to visit the PIAA booth on Tuesday and Wednesday, where they will have their own opportunity enter into a drawing for a set of PIAA Cross Country HID lights.
