September 6, 2006 - Popular custom bike builder Billy Lane awaits results of blood alcohol tests after he was injured Monday night in a head-on traffic accident that killed a man riding a Yamaha moped.

The Labor Day accident occurred on Highway A1A south of Melbourne Beach, Fla. Police investigators said Lane was attempting to pass two other vehicles on a double yellow-lined portion of the road when his southbound 2006 Dodge Ram pickup collided head-on with the northbound moped rider. The moped rider, identified as 56-year-old Gerald Morelock of Melbourne Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lane was treated and released. A passenger in Lane's truck, 22-year-old Erin Derrick of Rockledge, Fla., was also injured in the crash and reportedly remains hospitalized in stable condition.

As of Wednesday, no charges had been filed, as investigators from the Florida Highway Patrol await the results of Lane's blood alcohol tests, which were sent to a state lab in Orlando for evaluation. Investigators say they are asking the state to expedite the results of the blood alcohol tests, which usually take up to eight weeks to return.

In June, Lane was arrested in North Carolina on charges of drunk driving and operating a motorcycle without a helmet. He is due to appear in a Rowan County court on Oct. 5.
