WASHINGTON, D.C. - BMW is recalling 4,453 motorcycles and scooters to replace the side stand switch, NHTSA reported.

Vehicles involved include the C 600 Sport, C 650 GT, F 700 GS, F 800 GS, F 800 GS Adventure, F 800 GT, R 1200 R and R 1200 GS (shown here). The NHTSA recall campaign number is 14V065000.

"Water may enter the side stand switch, preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is a being ridden," the recall notice stated.

BMW said the problem was traced to a tooling change at the supplier, Toyo Jiann Tsang Electric Co. Ltd. in Taiwan. BMW said the switch housing was "not produced to specification." The OEM said it is not aware of any riding incidents related to the issue.

The recall is expected to begin in April. Dealers will be asked to replace the side stand switch free of charge.
