CRIME WATCH: Reno police warn of scooter, moped thefts

RENO, Nev. - The Reno Police Department says warm weather has brought out thieves who target motorcycles, scooters and mopeds.

Police say four or five mopeds are stolen each week in Reno. Most thefts have been near the downtown area, and police say often the owners park them outside of businesses or homes with little security.

Parking and storing the vehicles indoors or in areas that are well lit and have a lot of foot traffic helps reduce the risk. Authorities also suggest locking the steering column if possible, securing the bike to an immovable object with a heavy duty lock and chain, or installing an alarm that responds to motion, tampering or tipping.

Theft victims in the area are advised to call the department's non-emergency number at 775-334-COPS to report it, with the VIN and other pertinent information.
