European agency rejects challenge to Leatt neck brace patent

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Neck brace and protective gear company, Leatt Corp. announced that the European patent for its flagship product has been upheld following a challenge from Alpinestars SpA.

The European Patent Office upheld the patent owned by Xceed Holdings and licensed exclusively to Leatt, company announced in a press release. Alpinestars had challenged the validity of the patent on several grounds, including that the patent was not new or inventive, the release said.

The European Patent Office rejected Alpinestars' challenge on Oct. 10 and maintained Xceed's patent as granted.

"We are pleased that the EPO has upheld the patent," said Sean Macdonald, CEO of Leatt Corp. "We invest substantially in developing our technology and products. Intellectual property is a key part of our business and we expect our competitors to respect our rights."
