DALLAS, Texas – When custom motorcycles aren’t enough, think custom desserts. Strokers Dallas owner Rick Fairless has signed a lease on the former Big State Drug pharmacy and soda fountain in Irving and plans to revive the 1950s soda fountain.

“I want it to be a place to make Irving proud,” Fairless told the Dallas Morning News.

Big State Drug owner Brian Smith shuttered the 66-year-old store last Thursday, citing financial difficulties. Building owner Dan Neimeier pledged at the time to find a suitable tenant to take over the iconic downtown Irving building.

Fairless, 57, has lived in Irving all of his life. He said he jumped at the chance to take over Big State Drug because it is a family tradition: his parents used to hang out there after school and he still eats there once a week.

Fairless plans to renovate and reopen the shop in 60 days, then bring back some of Big State Drug’s employees.
