AMES, Iowa - A former car dealership will be come a new motorcycle dealership when Des Moines-based Fenders Cycle and Motorsport opens a second store in the next couple of months.
Fenders Cycle of Ames Honda will be a full-service dealership with ATVs, mopeds and full-sized motorcycles, co-owner Joe Klootwyk told the Ames Tribune. It hopes to begin doing business in town by September.
“Ames is a growing city, a college town,” Klootwyk said. “We saw it as a pretty big opportunity, to be able to get into the Ames market and open a new store to help us grow.”
Stocking mopeds and motorcycles caters to the student population, while ATVs will appeal to more agricultural customers.
“We have a lot of customers that come to our store here in Des Moines from Ames, so it will be easier for us to service those customers,” Klootwyk said.
Fenders will likely hold a grand opening event within a month or two of opening in Ames, he said.
Fenders is also relocating in Des Moines, from 1109 E. Army Post Road to a larger building about half a mile to its east on the same street. Klootwyk said that store will likely open in late August or September.
