The National Council of Motorcycle Dealer Associations will hold its annual meeting Feb. 12 in Indianapolis, one day before the official start of Dealer Expo. The NCMDA is a nonprofit organization formed as a resource for state dealer associations.
"We are not an industry that has a history of dealers working together," says NCMDA executive director Ed Lemco. "The independent nature of people who become motorcycle dealers has inhibited the sharing of information and working together." However, he continues, "things are now just coming at us too fast. There are too many things happening and changing every day. If you choose to isolate yourself in a shopkeeping mode, the best you can hope for is survival. State dealer associations — in addition to the historical roles of representing dealer interests in the state legislature and providing group insurance protection — now need to shift gears and be the information and training resource dealers need to prosper in the current environment."
Lemco and NCMDA members urge dealers to arrive in Indianapolis in time to attend the daylong meeting, which is open to all franchised stores. "Bring the director of your state association," Lemco suggests. "Come and learn what state associations are doing to protect your interests. And be part of the discussion as we explore more ways to do more for dealer members. If you do not have an active dealer association in your state, then come and seek the assistance of NCMDA in getting one started."
NCMDA members also will be able to take advantage of a private hospitality suite during the four-day Dealer Expo.
