Riders in Ridgeway, Va., are planning a rally at the end of May to honor a dealer who’s organized local rides for charities and others for years.
Ricky “Big Bird” Holcomb owns Big Bird’s Big Twins & Leather in Ridgeway. He’s organized the local holiday Toy Run for 18 years, and doesn’t plan to miss this year, either, despite a major strole Jan. 30 from which he still has a long road to recovery.
“I will ride” in the Toy Run in December, Holcomb told the Martinsville Bulletin. “If I don’t ride the motorcycle, I’ll ride the truck or whatever.”
Holcomb also organizes or helps organize events such as the Jennifer Short Memorial Ride and numerous poker runs.
After weeks of expensive treatment for his stroke, Bird returned to work March 11, the day after he was released from the hospital. He is still undergoing outpatient therapy. Much of the cost isn’t covered under Holcomb’s insurance.
Friends are planning a ride in Holcomb’s honor beginning at 1 p.m. May 22. There is no entry fee, but donations are welcome, according to Glenn Harding, an organizer. Other details, including the route, are TBA.
