F3 Motorsports (Booth M311) yesterday unveiled the Mark I Steering Damper for high-performance sportbikes. The Mark I uses "magnetorheological fluid technology" that allows it to adjust immediately to impact, eliminating head shake and most conditions that can cause tank slapping.
The Mark I uses special circuitry to provide additional damping at the onset of a tank slapper, thereby reducing rider fatigue and improving steering capability. The unit offers eight damping settings.
The steering damper was developed by F3 in conjunction with Himmelsbach Racing. It was track tested by Grand Prix national champion Mike Himmelsbach. Mike and his father, Bill, are most noted for the development of the Aprilia Mille Superbike.
F3, which stands for Form Fit & Function LLC, is a New Jersey-based company founded last year to develop products that address vibration and steering control issues inherent in high-performance racing.
