Staff at Gutterridge Harley-Davidson in Tilton, Ill., and members of the Tilton EMS and Medix have been awarded Heart of the Community awards from Provena Regional EMS for saving a man’s life after he collapsed on the dealership lot Sept. 8.
“One of our employees, Larry David, came in and said that there was a man lying in the parking lot,” Roger Gutterridge told the Danville Commercial News. “I ran back into the parking lot with Larry and found Mr. [ William] Maag laying face down. I could tell he was not breathing and his lips were blue. Then when I touched him to check for a pulse, he was ice cold.”
He and his father, Michael Gutterridge, rolled Maag onto his back and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
“Our local HOG group has monthly meetings and at one meeting we were taught some basic CPR,” Gutterridge says. “So it really helped.”
Within seven minutes of the call to 911, members of the Tilton EMS were on the scene and administered a shock to Maag with a defibrillator.
Maag was in the hospital from Sept. 8 until Oct. 19, having suffered a stroke and a heart attack.
Wife Julie Maag says she is thankful for the Gutterridge employees and for Tilton EMS.
“They are just so awesome,” she says. “There is no way we can ever repay them.”
