Production has begun at the new motorcycle plant Honda Motor Co., Ltd. constructed at its Kumamoto campus.
Built as a "green factory" and designed to achieve a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the existing motorcycle plant at Kumamoto, the new plant will serve as the global leader of Honda's motorcycle production operations.
The factory is scheduled to produce a full range of motorcycles, from tiny 50cc models to the massive 1832cc Gold Wing — a bike previously built in Marysville, Ohio.
Honda announced in late February that it plans to discontinue production of motorcycles in North America in spring 2009. The company announced its intention to consolidate all motorcycle production from the Marysville motorcycle plant and the Hamamatsu factory in Japan at the new Kumamoto factory.
