LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Yamaha chose an inline 847cc three-cylinder to power the new 2014 FZ-09 naked sportbike, which will begin retailing for $7,990 in September.

Dealers got their first look at the model this week at Yamaha’s national dealer meeting in Las Vegas.

Other features include fuel injection, liquid cooling and an aluminum frame.

Yamaha first revealed the FZ-09 as an engine-only concept at the 2012 Intermot exposition in Germany with this announcement: “With its clean torque output, this advanced new, light, slim and compact three-cylinder engine will shape Yamaha’s future motorcycle lineup.”

The FZ-09 features the following performance components:

  • Yamaha’s YCC-T ride-by-wire throttle system,
  • D-mode with three throttle position settings,
  • adjustable suspension and
  • variable throttle intake lengths.

The three-cylinder Crossplane Concept crankshaft configuration helps create an even firing interval that Yamaha claims provides plenty of smooth, linear torque.

“The result is a sound and experience like no other motorcycle on the market,” the company said.

The FZ-09 will be available in two color options: Liquid Graphite and Rapid Red.
