Flywheel Trueness — Exposed!

The Jims Flywheel Runout Inspection Gauge tool kit (No. 785) measures the trueness of a flywheel in an engine case. A mechanic mounts the kit to the case to inspect flywheel runout of the pinion shaft. The tool also can be used to check the amount of gear lash on gear-driven cams found in some Twin Cam engines. Finally, in conjunction with the Jims Tire Rotator (No. 936), a mechanic can use the tool to remove any unwanted stress being applied to the flywheel by not rotating the engine with the electric starter motor. The tool kit is CNC-machined from 6061 aluminum and finished with Jims’ blue anodizing. It comes with detailed instructions.

Multibrand Diagnostic Tool Adds ATVs

Unlike previous incarnations, version 6.0 of the Motorscan MS5650 diagnostic tool can be used with popular ATVs made by Arctic Cat, Can-Am, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. The device’s maker, Strategic Tools, says it also has continued to update its motorcycle coverage. For 2010, it has added immobilizer system coverage and 2009 model year coverage for BMW K1300s. The company also added coverage for systems on carbureted bikes and Buell units. Strategic says it has hundreds of updates and new coverage for units made by Ducati, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and many others. Depending on the configuration, the Motorscan MS5650 costs between $2,500 and $3,500.

ATV or Motorcycle, Same Clamps

The Coats RC-150 tire changer allows motorcycle and ATV dealers to change a wide range of tires, up to a fat 300. Motorcycle rim clamps provide extra clearance for sprockets, and they can be used in three positions, allowing the operator to go from an ATV wheel to a motorcycle wheel without changing clamps. The RC-150 can clamp rims ranging in diameter from 6 inches to 23 inches. A bead-loosening system (with a backup system) has a contoured pad for motorcycle tires. The system’s two positions for wide and narrow tires reduce the risk of wheel damage. The RC-150’s retail price is listed as $4,595.
