In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, KYMCO is recalling about 1,876 UXV 500 side-by-sides due to a fire hazard. Owners should stop using the units unless otherwise instructed, the government says.

According to the CPSC, an exposed portion of the exhaust system can allow debris such as leaves, brush or other flammable materials to enter the opening and ignite.

KYMCO USA has received three reports of vehicles catching on fire and being damaged. No reports of injuries have been received.

The following models are being recalled:

  • 2009-to-2012 UXV 500, UXV 500 LE and UXV 500 SE models with a VIN ranging from RFBUS37A 09B100101 through 9CB490364.
  • 2012 UXV 500i, UXV500i LE and UXV 500i SE models with a VIN ranging from RFBUS33A 4CB100101 through 8CB230205.

The VIN is on the frame behind the right front wheel. The 10th alphanumeric character of the VIN is the model year (9 = 2009, A = 2010, B = 2011 and C = 2012).

Consumers are being asked to return these vehicles to KYMCO dealer for a free installation of a repair kit.
