A pair of Michigan entrepreneurs is getting ready to open a state-of-the art, year-round, snowmobile drag strip on 60 acres three miles north of Mancelona.
Kirt and April Helsel have created the Infinity Raceway with 500 feet of track, more than 1,700 feet of “shut down area” and a computerized Race America timing and lighting system.
“Most people don’t know that snowmobiles can also race on grass, and asphalt surfaces. We want to hold race events for everyone — ranging from tots to senior citizens,” April Helsel told the Gaylord Herald Times. “This summer we plan on hosting swap meets, both for Harley Davidsons and snowmobiles.”
The Helsels invited expert snowmobile racers from Ontario, New York, Wisconsin and Minnesota to visit the proposed site and review their plans before building the raceway.
The course opens to the public Jan. 23. Alcoholic beverages are banned from the premises. Race participants can register from 8-10 a.m. with racing beginning at 11 a.m. The price of admission is $10 for adults with children 12 and under getting in for free. Call (231) 437-0058 for information,or see www.infinityraceway.com.
