DIAMOND BAR, Calif. - About 670,000 UTVs were sold in the U.S. between 2010 and 2012, according to a new 62-page report issued by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA).

The report is designed to provide accessory businesses with an understanding of the needs and purchasing habits of the rapidly expanding number of UTV owners, according to SEMA. The report also will help in marketing, sales and product development efforts for UTVs and their owners, the Diamond Bar-based trade group said.

“This is the first time we have done such extensive research into the powersports market,” said Gavin Knapp, SEMA senior manager of market research.

Among other things, the report shows that 82 percent of UTV owners have purchased or plan to purchase upgrades to their vehicles, and spend an average of $1,700 per vehicle doing so, SEMA said.

SEMA members may download free copies of the report at SEMA’s website.
