SANTA ROSA, Calif. – It’s not often a suspected thief is caught this way: shopping for parts at the dealership from which the motorcycle was stolen.

Police responded to Santa Rosa Powersports around 2:45 p.m. March 7 after employees reported two men trying to buy a part for a stolen motorcycle. A motorcycle in the back of the suspects’ truck had been stolen from the dealership in a Nov. 5 burglary, Sgt. Ryan Corcoran told Bay City News.

The suspects had left the store when police arrived, but an officer in the area saw the truck traveling away, Corcoran said. The truck turned and the suspects abandoned the vehicle before the officers could catch up to them, he said.

With help from a Sonoma County Sheriff's office helicopter, two suspects were detained and the motorcycle was recovered, he said. An investigation led officers to arrest a 21-year-old man and book him into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen motorcycle, violation of probation and violation of parole.
