N.C. to shorten cycle learner's permit duration Jan. 1

North Carolina will change the way it issues motorcycle permits as of Jan. 1.

Starting next year, the state will issue motorcycle learner’s permits that expire in 12 months, and only one six-month renewal will be allowed.

Riders under 18 who apply for a motorcycle learner’s permit or endorsement on a driver’s license will have to pass a Motorcycle Safety Foundation or N.C. Motorcycle Safety Education Program course first.
