OEMs in Japan Drop Production 44% in May

The four largest motorcycle manufacturers in Japan produced 69,626 units in May, down 44.1% from 124,641 units produced in May 2007. Production in May signified the ninth consecutive month of declining production, says the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Honda produced 17,415 units in May, down from 34,978 units in May 2007; Kawasaki produced 11,512 units, down from 24,138 units; Suzuki produced 19,214 units, down from 37,133 units; and Yamaha produced 21,482 units, down from 28,371 units produced in May 2007.

The OEMs exported 62,048 units in May 2008, down 14.1% from the export of 72,240 units in May 2007.

Honda exported 7,305 units in May 2008, down from the export of 17,159 units in May 2007; Kawasaki shipped 8,380 units, down from 16,649 units; Suzuki shipped 29,283 units, down from 18,620 units; and Yamaha exported 17,080 units, down from the export of 19,812 units in May 2007.

The OEMs shipped 21,829 units to the United States in May, up from shipments of 18,284 units in May 2007.
