Our 2014 To-Do List (round one...)

TO BECOME more organized in what is expected to be an extremely busy 2014, we have started our to-do list a little earlier than normal. Hurray for us. 

Here goes:

JANUARY – Focus on the V-Twin aftermarket, especially with all the P&A for the new Rushmores and Indians. Compile V-Twin Buyers Guide for our digital edition.

FEBRUARY – Spring/Summer Parts and Service issue. Release results of the Q4 Dealer Sentiment Index produced with Baird Research. PWC Buyers Guide, too.

MARCH – Big performance and racing focus, along with a roundup on electric vehicles. (Bruce Steever loves this issue…)

APRIL – Profile adventure-touring market. Produce Consumer Buying Forecast study in conjunction with our Progressive International Motorcycle Shows brethren. IMPORTANT! The 23rd annual Top 100 Dealer Competition opens April 1.

MAY –A salute to the women – the riders, the retailers, the visionaries who have helped build the industry.

JUNE – Focus on custom bikes and pre-owned market (note to Beth Demont: lots of photos). Also, digital guide to business systems and software.

JULY – Kickoff to the Dealernews 50th Anniversary year, culminating with the Golden Anniversary issue in June 2015. A salute to the progress the industry has made since Motorcycle Dealer News launched in June 1965. (Create drop-down to-do lists for print, online, video and event projects.)

AUGUST – Big travel month with new models and PG&A introductions. Call for judges for the Top 100 Dealer competition. Figure out who’s going to Sturgis. Start planning 2015 calendar (really…?).

SEPTEMBER – Deadline to enter the 2014 Top 100 Dealer competition. Extend one week and remind everyone to finish their entries ASAP. (It happens every year.) Judging begins.

OCTOBER – Judging of the Top 100 entries wraps up last week of the month. Send reminder Oct. 15 to judges that the deadline is looming. Send another reminder Oct. 25. Issue verbal threats Oct. 29.

NOVEMBER – Announce the 2014 Top 100 Dealers. Work on pre-Dealer Expo coverage and the show directory, plus reveal the results of the biennial OEM Report Card. Turkey dinner with family sometime around then. Give thanks for Outlook reminder tool.

DECEMBER – Host the 2014 Top 100 Dealers and reveal the new Dealer of the Year during a grand gala in Chicago in conjunction with the 2014 Dealer Expo. Keep emcees in line (you know who you are…). Produce the Dealer Expo Show Dailies and monitor the dealer symposium. And that’s just the first week.
