Bill Shenk and PowerHouse Dealer Services (PHDS) have been selected by Advanstar Communications (parent of Dealernews) to launch a series of dealer 20 Groups under the Dealernews brand. The agreement is similar to a 20 Group venture the magazine had with IBSG Dealer Services two years ago.
However, this time the venture is restricted to an editorial and sponsorship deal calling for Dealernews to "lend its name" to a new network of 20 Groups for dealers who do not wish to join a group affiliated with a specific vendor or manufacturer. A 20 Group is a peer group of non-competing dealers who establish performance and financial benchmarks, and then meet several times a year to compare their efforts and achievements, plus discuss any problems.
In return for sponsoring the 20 Group program, PHDS will submit aggregate dealer performance data on an exclusive basis to Dealernews for publication each month. "It is important to note here that we will be receiving aggregate data on a national basis," says Mary Slepicka, editorial director. "We won't be receiving any data that can be tied to a specific dealer. Our goal, rather, is to present performance summaries that will be of interest to other dealers across the country. Individual dealer information will remain private, and will not be revealed by PHDS to Dealernews."
Dealernews will not receive any monetary compensation from the 20 Group membership fees, she notes.
Until the new Dealernews 20 Groups have enough members to generate composite reports, PHDS will deliver aggregate performance data from its core 20 Group networks to Dealernews. The 20 Group performance data will be published monthly in the magazine starting in July, Slepicka says.
