Piaggio is recalling certain Fly and Vespa scooters due to an ignition problem that could cause a fire. The potential number of units affected is 2,147.
Affected models are the
- 2011 and 2012 Fly 50 4V,
- 2010-to-2012 Vespa LX 50 4V and
- 2009-to-2012 Vespa S 50 4V four-valve scooters.
The ignition control unit on all these units may fail and alter the ignition timing. Improper ignition timing may cause an engine backfire into the airbox, increasing the risk of a fire.
Piaggio will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition control unit for free. The recall is expected to begin on or before Jan. 17.
