2 time winner
Second Runner-Up 2009 (TIE). Owners: Garrett and Diane Paull Location: Joplin, Mo. Store size: 21,000 sq. ft. Vehicle brands: Honda, Lehman Trikes, Suzuki, Yamaha URL: www.powersportsofjoplin.com
This store that tied as second runner-up completely reflects co-owner Garrett Paull's former life as a Navy man and commercial pilot and as one Top 100 judge says, he "truly cares about his community." Outside the multiline dealership is a 125-foot flagpole bearing a 30'x60' American flag that serves as a beacon for customers and demonstrates his patriotism. In one community event, the Paulls used the dealership as a collection point for the Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign, a drive that collects cash and old cell phones, the latter of which are recycled for cash, with the money going for prepaid calling cards for deployed soldiers.
Each of the store's brands are grouped together on the sales floor to give the feeling of three different dealerships. Surrounding the units is P&A that is merchandized according to the type of vehicle. Customers who don't want to or don't have time to talk to a parts counter employee can use the newly added "catalog bar," which features a bank of distributor books from which the customers can place orders. The owners say that this addition has boosted P&A sales. The service area is currently being remodeled based on ideas taken from past Dealernews Top 100 dealers as well as from industry consultant Gart Sutton's group. It features a drive-in service door that allows customers to ride up to the service counter.
Employees of Powersports of Joplin enjoy performance-based bonuses as well as a subsidized membership to a local fitness center. The store regularly holds contests where workers from various departments band together to win prizes. On the community relations side, the shop is a sponsor of many groups, including the Choppers 4 Children rally, an event that raised nearly $50,000 for the Children's Miracle Network. The store is also the presenting sponsor for the chamber of commerce Young Professionals network. The Route 66 Vintage Motorcycle Club, a group that consists of many local and influential businessmen, holds its monthly meetings at the dealership.
