WICHITA, Kan. – What a difference a week makes. Ross Reed was planning to close Mid-America Powersports, but the word got out -- and now he has four prospective buyers.
“It’s kind of one of those fluid situations,” Reed said.
The store, which opened in 1988 and is in four buildings, is “a mixture of several businesses that I purchased over the years,” Reed told the Wichita Eagle. The buildings are a combined total of more than 40,000 square feet, and the four-acre property could be subdivided.
The business is financially solid, he says, but the recession took the wind out of his sails. “My wife and I didn’t take this decision lightly,” he said. “We’re just tired.”
Selling the shop could save the 21 jobs there now, down from 50 at its pre-recession peak. “It would be good for my customers and employees. I think it would be good for the city.”
