SANTA FE, N.M. - After 10 years in business, Centaur Cycles and Scooters will close its doors at the end of January.
The company has been selling Royal Enfield, Vespa, Hyosoung and other brands of bikes in Santa Fe, and at one point had a location in Albuquerque.
But, said Meltz, the motorcycle business has been stagnant since 2008, and she and her husband Richard decided to close the store after six unprofitable years.
“We’ve never made any money since the recession,” co-owner Meg Meltz told the Albuquerque Business Journal. “We’ve been working for free for six years, and decided ‘this is dumb.’”
Centaur was the state’s only Royal Enfield dealer as well as Santa Fe’s only Vespa scooter dealership.
The company’s two employees will take over some of the unsold inventory and are planning to open a new motorcycle service center in Santa Fe.
