Snow Helps Wyoming Dealers Survive

Snowmobiles and auto repair are helping two Wyoming powersports dealers ride out the economic downturn.

Terry Hloucha credits snowmobilers with keeping his Action Motorsports, south of Gillette, busy, even though he had to delay plans to move to a bigger location.

He started planning for a move last summer, but had trouble getting a loan for the new building. Eventually, he got a loan with support from the Wyoming Small Business Association.

Then slow ATV sales brought the dealer to the brink of layoffs. Now he and his wife, Sandi tell the Gilette News Record they’re happy they kept valuable, trained workers. And the new site may add two more jobs.

Hloucha says snowmobilers want the latest thing, regardless of the economy.

Business has been down so much GT Powersports this year that owner Gary Boyle has been relying on his sideline of repairing cars. “If I just had the powersports side, I’d be starving to death,” Boyle told the newspaper. “For ATVs, 2009 was the toughest year I’ve had since 1994.”
