SHAWNEE, Okla. – Charges are pending for a man accused of hopping on a brand new Yamaha motorcycle that had the keys in it and driving the bike off a local dealer’s lot.

The suspect, who was held in the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center April 1 on $6,000 bond for the stolen property complaints, is expected to be charged with receiving and possession of stolen property. Multiple arrests have been made in the investigation, authorities told the Shawnee News-Star. Shawnee police have recovered the stolen 2014 Yamaha R1, which had been repainted by the suspects, police reports show.

The investigation started March 28 when officers responded to Sehorn Yamaha, where a suspect who was there with others to look at motorcycles allegedly rode one off the lot. The entire incident was caught on surveillance video.

Police searching for the stolen motorcycle found a vehicle with a matching description in a nearby neighborhood. That discovery led to the arrests of several people.

The report shows the suspect was asked how he got the motorcycle and he allegedly told police he asked some friends to take him to look at motorcycles, where he noticed one with the keys in it.

The report shows he told officers that “he had been high for the last couple days and without thinking, he hopped on [the motorcycle] and rode away.”
