SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Tesla Motors Inc. co-founder Martin Eberhard is joining the advisory board of electric motorcycle startup BRD Motorcycles. He reportedly was attracted by the company’s homegrown approach to battery technology.
“They are not trying to cobble together parts or buy their tech from Chinese or Italian motor suppliers. They have a world-class battery, one of the best I’ve seen. And they treat safety as a religion,” Eberhard said.
BRD said it has raised another $1 million from angel investors, whom founder and CEO Marc Fenigstein declined to identify, to commercialize its RedShift all-electric racing bikes, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Last year the BRD parent company Faster Faster Inc. raised $850,000 in seed funding. The 11-employee company redesigned its battery technology to reduce costs and improve performance after closing the initial round of funding, switching from “pouch cells” to “small format cells,” pursuing the same battery strategy as Tesla.
BRD Motorcycles also struck a deal with BMW Motorcycles of San Francisco to carry the startup’s 2014 line of motorcycles. Prices for BRD’s RedShift bikes start at $14,995 (not including federal and state incentives for purchasing electric vehicles). Limited production of 1,000 units should begin in mid-2014, the company noted.
