Tickets now on sale for "Carlsbad USGP: 1980" movie premiere

Tickets are now on sale for the June 22 world movie premiere of  "Carlsbad USGP:1980," presented by Daystar Products, in San Diego and Houston.

In 1980 at the Carlsbad Raceway, Santee's Marty Moates became the first American to win the U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross in its then-10-year history. Not only did the victory by Moates end a string of European victories, it opened a floodgate of U.S. champions in the sport.

The film covers everything from early Carlsbad USGP history to the 1980 season leading to that historic day. It also includes Marty Moates' background and flag-to-flag action in both motos on June 22, 1980. "ABC Wide World of Sports" television crews captured the race action; the producers of the movie licensed the original footage from ABC/ESPN and up-converted it to high-definition.

Reportedly the movie provides the best copy of this race footage ever released to the public, according to producer/director Todd Huffman.

Nearly 60 people interviewed for the film include Brad Lackey, Roger De Coster, Bob Hannah, Gerrit Wolsink, Danny LaPorte, Marty Smith, Marty Tripes, Chuck Sun, Andre Malherbe, Andre Vromans, Harry Everts, Rick Johnson, Ron Lechien, Broc Glover, Jim Gibson, Rex Staten, Goat Breker, Mark Simo, Super Hunky, Gavin Trippe, Tom White, Dave Arnold, Mike Guerra, Larry Huffman, Laurens Offner and Marty Moates' brother, David.

The film is produced by Pipeline Digital Media, creators of the television series "The Motocross Files."

The movie will premiere on the same night -- 8 p.m. June 22 -- at venues in San Diego and Houston. The San Diego premiere will take place at the historic Spreckels Theatre. The screening will be followed by an afterparty with motocross legends at the Side Bar in the Gas Lamp Quarter. The San Diego event will benefit Adaptive Athlete Events.

The Houston premiere is being hosted by Honda of Houston, a previous Dealernews Top 100 winning dealership (

Tickets at both venues are $20 per person or $30/couple for general admission. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $100. VIP packages include a pre-premiere reception with motocross legends, preferred movie premiere seating, and entrance to the exclusive afterparty. A commemorative remake of the original 1980 USGP program will be distributed to all attendees.

Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling Ticketmaster at 800.745.3000 (ticket fees through Ticketmaster additional). The Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel has also extended a $99 per night special room rate for movie premiere guests.
