Garrett Paull and his GM Eric Slagle have done it again. This three-time Top 100 winner seems to always be firing on all cylinders, as was documented in our November 2009 Dealernews cover story. One of the most striking things to jump out of POJ’s entry this year was the store’s involvement in founding the Joplin Metro Motorcycle Safety Alliance, an educational campaign aimed at reminding local drivers to look twice for motorcyclists. The store teamed up with the Joplin Police Department and Cycle Connection Harley-Davidson to form the group, which recently acquired some state money to pay for signs warning motorists to be aware of motorcycle riders.
In July 2009, the store ran a “Scooter Daze” promotion that included a radio advertising campaign to promote scooter sales. It gave the public a chance to win prizes if they spotted POJ’s “Scooter Swarm” tearing around the city of Joplin. The results? Scooter sales jumped 9 percent for the month over the previous year — an interesting feat given the spike in scooter sales in 2008. POJ runs promotions that are exclusive to followers of the dealership’s Facebook fan page, Twitter accounts and MySpace page. The store is also advertising on local radio station websites and on area sportbike forums. “This has gained us valuable exposures on the Internet and increased our online sales dramatically,” writes Slagle in the Top 100 entry.
Since Paull took over the store in 2008, PowerSports of Joplin has instituted a Loyalty Card program and also offers discounts to veterans, active-duty military, police and fire. The store encourages customers to get involved in the events and sales that it hosts. “It is truly amazing. We have created an environment where our customers want to help and be part of the store,” it say in the entry.
