WASHINGTON, D.C. - Irbit Motorworks of America Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Ural Gear-up (see image), Patrol, Patrol T, Tourist, and Tourist T motorcycles with sidecars produced June 2 through Oct. 25, 2012, NHTSA announced.
The aluminum rims manufactured in April 2012 were improperly heat treated which could result in cracked, split or broken rims. The failure of a rim may result in a wheel lock up, increasing the risk of a crash, the agency reported.
According to the notice, 273 vehicles are affected.
"The known defect is specific to aluminum rims provided by our supplier," Irbit told NHTSA. "The cause of this defect is poor quality control during the heat treatment process... The rims may not have been fully treated for hardness."
Irbit dealers are asked to inspect the motorcycles and replace any aluminum rims manufactured in April 2012 free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of November. Owners may contact Irbit Motorworks at 1-425-702-8484.
