A new Wisconsin law that took effect Tuesday requires scooter and moped riders to have insurance for their two-wheelers, just like car and truck owners.
Assemblyman John Nygren of Marinette says his colleagues never intended to force scooter owners to get vehicle insurance.
The main author of the insurance mandate, Milwaukee Senate Democrat Tim Carpenter, has not commented. And neither has Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan, according to WTAQ.
Finance co-chairman Mark Miller of Monona says he’s not sure if his colleagues meant to include scooters.
The Wisconsin State Journal quotes local insurers as saying scooter coverage could cost $150 to $300 a year.
