Wiseco Recalls Connecting Rods, Crankshafts

Wiseco Performance Products, of Mentor, Ohio is recalling about 420 examples of its connecting rods or crankshaft assemblies for Yamaha and Kawasaki dirt bikes.

Wiseco says engine stress could cause the connecting rods to crack and the engine to lock up, posing a crash hazard. No such incidents have been reported.

Manufactured in China, the product was sold by distributors nationwide and directly to consumers from March 2007 through December 2008 for about $130 for the connecting rods and between $240 and $300 for the crankshaft assemblies.

Recalled product includes:

  • YZ450F Crank Assembly (part #WPC139) sold between Feb. 20, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • YZ250F Crank Assembly (part #WPC140) sold between March 3, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • WR250F Crank Assembly (part #WPC141) sold between March 1, 2007 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • KX250F/RMZ250 Crank Assembly (part #WPC144) sold between Aug. 20, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • WR450F Crank Assembly (part # WPC145) sold between Aug. 8, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • YZ/WR250F Connecting Rod (part # WPR196) sold between July 1, 2007 and Dec. 15, 2008;
  • YZ/WR450F Connecting Rod (part # WPR197) sold between Jan. 20, 2008 and Dec. 15, 2008.

    • The part number and date code can be found on the product’s packaging.

    Consumers should stop using off-road bikes on which the recalled connecting rods and crankshaft assemblies were installed and immediately contact Wiseco for free replacement parts and repair, or a full refund if the consumer has already replaced the recalled engine parts.
