WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration announced that Zero Motorcycles Inc. is recalling 2012 S and DS electric motorcycles to fix a problem with the motor controller.
"These motorcycles are equipped with a motor encoder position signal that may drift over the extended use of the motorcycle," NHTSA said. "If the signal drifts outside of the given parameters, the motor controller may shut off, resulting in the motorcycle inadvertently losing power." Sudden loss of power could lead to a crash, the agency noted.
The recall affects about 315 units.
Zero is notifying owners. Dealers are required to reprogram the motorcycle's motor controller free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on Sept. 24.
